Around 2.4 lakh aspirants registered on Mumbai University’s portal for degree college admissions until Saturday, the last day for form submissions. These numbers do not include students from the CBSE and ISC schools, as their class XII results are still awaited. This is the first time that admissions to degree colleges in the city have started without including CBSE and ISC students.
As per the university’s schedule, the first merit list for the university’s affiliated colleges will be released on June 29. Some college principals have raised concerns over the admission season being chaotic, with the university firm on its decision to proceed with the schedule without waiting for CBSE and ISC results. Since some of the sought-after autonomous colleges are holding entrance tests for their self-financed courses, they will not be able to release their merit list on June 29.
The university typically sees registrations from around 2.5 to 2.8 lakh students each year. Last year, more class XII students were eligible for admissions as board exams were cancelled and students were evaluated based on internal marks.
Concerns Raised:
- Incomplete Registration: Exclusion of CBSE and ISC students due to pending results.
- Scheduling Issues: Autonomous colleges unable to align their entrance test results with the university’s merit list schedule.
- Increased Chaos: The first time the process is beginning without CBSE and ISC results, leading to potential administrative challenges.
Statistics:
- Current Registrations: 2.4 lakh
- Typical Registrations: 2.5 to 2.8 lakh
- Reason for Last Year’s Spike: Evaluation based on internal marks due to the cancellation of board exams.
The situation indicates that the university and colleges will need to adapt their processes to manage admissions effectively this year, considering the unprecedented exclusion of a significant segment of students from the initial stages.
