The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a new framework enabling universities to conduct exams for courses provided via the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform. This initiative aims to enhance flexibility and accessibility for earning academic credits through online learning.

Key Features of the UGC SWAYAM Framework:

Student Benefits:

  • University Exams for SWAYAM Courses: Students can now take exams for SWAYAM courses at their respective universities, in addition to the existing proctored exams conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL).
  • Integration with Traditional Programs: This framework allows students to combine online learning with traditional academic programs more seamlessly.
  • Re-Examination Opportunities: Students who missed or did not pass the initial SWAYAM exams can retake them in later semesters.
  • Credit Transfer: Achieved credits will be reflected in students’ transcripts.

Implementation Details:

  • Guidance Documents: UGC has released two documents, the “University Dashboard User Guide” and the “Steps for Adopting SWAYAM MOOC Courses,” to assist institutions in adopting and integrating SWAYAM courses.
  • Nodal Officer Requirement: Universities are required to appoint a Nodal Officer to oversee SWAYAM course registration, exams, and credit transfers.

UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the importance of this framework, stating, “UGC invites all HEIs to adopt SWAYAM courses and make use of the framework to conduct examination for better learner-friendliness.”

This decision follows a series of awareness programs and consultations with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) over the past year, reflecting the growing interest in leveraging SWAYAM courses for academic credit.
