BEL AIR, Md. — The wave of school threats in Maryland shows no signs of slowing, with two more reported on Wednesday.

In Harford County, a Snapchat post began circulating overnight, containing a direct threat stating, “shooting up the school, this is a threat.” Deputies swiftly launched an investigation and tracked the suspect to their home. The alleged perpetrator turned out to be a high school student, who was subsequently charged with making threats to commit an act of mass violence.

Due to Maryland law, the Sheriff’s Office was unable to release the student’s name. However, they did disclose that three school-related threats had been investigated within the past 13 hours, bringing the total number of threats in Harford County to 11 over the last week. This surge follows the tragic shooting at Joppatowne High School earlier this month.

In a separate incident, a Baltimore City school was targeted by a threat on Thursday morning. A prank call reported that an individual was armed with a gun inside Montebello Elementary/Middle School. Baltimore Police investigated the call as a potential active shooter situation but later determined it to be a false alarm. Parents were notified via text and robocalls that the situation was safe, and dismissal proceeded as normal.

Last week, WMAR-2 News highlighted disturbing data from Anne Arundel County Police, who reported 14 school threat tips in just a 24-hour period—surpassing the 13 received the week before. Statewide, there were 42 reported threats within a 36-hour window, underscoring the alarming trend sweeping across Maryland.

Local authorities continue to treat each incident with the utmost seriousness, despite the majority being unfounded, as they work to ensure student safety and mitigate further panic.
