Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the filmmaking process, streamlining both pre- and post-production tasks in Indian cinema. AI tools are being employed to handle time-consuming functions such as color grading, texture enhancement, and creating photorealistic characters. Filmmakers like Chhatrapal Ninawe and Shekhar Kapur are even using AI to generate scripts, with AI-driven films like Maharaja in Denims—based on Khushwant Singh’s novel—set to be released soon. This film is significant as it was created without actors, cameras, or traditional sets, showcasing AI’s potential in the film industry.

Krishna Sankar Kusuma, a professor at Jamia Millia Islamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, highlights AI’s growing role in mainstream cinema, especially in enhancing action sequences and building narratives across various genres. AI facilitates techniques such as motion tracking and superimposing, allowing filmmakers to shoot scenes in one location and transport the actors to entirely different environments using AI.

While some fear that AI may encroach on human creativity or eliminate jobs, Kusuma believes otherwise. He argues that AI should be seen as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human input. “Cinema is inherently a creative field, and AI will not replace the human element,” says Kusuma. Instead, AI provides filmmakers with visual references and enhances the creative process, without diminishing the originality of the work.

Kusuma also emphasizes the importance of incorporating AI into film studies curricula. With AI becoming increasingly prevalent in mass media, including the rise of AI anchors and influencers, Kusuma argues that it is crucial to upskill future filmmakers and communication professionals.

Despite AI’s rapid integration into filmmaking, Kusuma reassures that stardom in Indian cinema will remain unaffected. Unlike Hollywood, Indian audiences are deeply attached to their favorite actors. “AI may enhance their on-screen appearance and action sequences, but the love for stars will persist,” he concludes.
