In a move aimed at improving the quality of education, the Kerala government has introduced a “subject minimum” marks system for school examinations. The decision, approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, requires students to achieve a minimum score in each subject to advance to the next class.

The new policy will be implemented in phases:

  • 2024-25 Academic Year: Subject minimums introduced for Class 8.
  • 2025-26 Academic Year: System expanded to include Classes 8 and 9.
  • 2026-27 Academic Year: System extended to Classes 8, 9, and 10.

This initiative addresses ongoing concerns about the quality of education in state schools and aims to replace the previous practice of automatic promotion. The government plans to develop a comprehensive program to enhance academic standards across classes 1 to 10, with public participation being a key component.

The implementation of this system marks the beginning of efforts to reform public education, following recommendations from a recent educational conclave focused on improving educational quality.
