Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma announced that starting from 2025, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will conduct two Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations each year. This decision aims to provide students with a second opportunity to pass their board exams.
Key Changes and Timeline:
- Dual Exams Per Year: MBOSE will hold the first SSLC exam in February or early March, and the second exam will be scheduled for May. This will allow students who fail in one or more subjects to retake the exam within a few months.
- Elimination of Optional Paper: From the academic year 2026-2027, the optional paper or ‘best of five papers’ system will be removed. Students will need to pass all six subjects in their board examinations.
Additional Approvals:
- Service Rules: The cabinet has approved the Service Rules for the Meghalaya Public School Service and the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024.
- Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024: This bill has also been approved to support farmer welfare and empowerment.
Objectives and Benefits:
The introduction of two SSLC exams per year is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims to reduce the time gap between attempts, providing students with a fair chance to succeed. The elimination of the optional paper system is intended to ensure that all students meet the same academic standards.
