One remarkable example comes from South West London, where AI is being used to help a 12-year-old student named Howard, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of arm cancer. Howard, a pupil from Twickenham, UK, began undergoing chemotherapy in January 2024, which drastically reduced his school attendance to less than 50%. Faced with both physical and emotional challenges due to his illness, Howard found it difficult to keep up with his studies.
To address this issue, an AI-powered robot named “AV Howard” was introduced as a proxy to help Howard continue his education despite his absence from the classroom. AV Howard is an interactive robot that serves as Howard’s electronic double, allowing him to attend classes remotely from home or the hospital.
This robot is more than just a passive device; it acts as an avatar for Howard, enabling him to interact with his teachers and classmates in real-time. Equipped with a built-in camera and speaker, AV Howard allows Howard to participate in classroom activities, read books, and complete worksheets as if he were physically present. His fellow students have embraced this technology, even undergoing “robot training” to ensure they can effectively assist Howard through the robot. They take turns carrying AV Howard between lessons, enabling Howard to stay connected and engaged with the class.
Howard’s classmates have expressed their joy in being able to help him during this difficult time. “It feels quite good because we’re doing the right thing for a good cause, and to be able to help him is an honour,” said one student, Campbell.
