The CBSE has introduced a set of alternative science experiments that students can perform at home using readily available household items. These activities aim to achieve similar learning outcomes as traditional lab experiments required for Class 9 and Class 10 in the 2021-22 academic year.

Due to COVID-19 lockdowns and subsequent school closures, face-to-face instruction and hands-on practical work in Science were significantly reduced. In response, CBSE issued guidelines to schools last September on conducting practical work during lockdowns. Schools were encouraged to utilize the OLabsto platform, offering virtual, CBSE-aligned experiment experiences for classes 9 to 12.

Additionally, CBSE provided schools with a list of supplementary activities sourced from the NCERT lab manual for Class 9 and Class 10. These alternative experiments include step-by-step guides, videos, worksheets for recording observations, and a list of required materials. ThinkTac developed the content for these activities, which is accessible on the Diksha portal.

The board emphasized that the activities and materials chosen are safe for independent student use but recommended that teachers review them before assigning and inform parents if any specific activity requires supervision. CBSE also plans to provide online training on how to implement these activities effectively.

The list of Class 9 and 10 lab experiments, along with links to alternative hands-on activities, is detailed in an annexure to CBSE’s recent circular.
