Faculty members at Delhi University’s Law Centre-I are hopeful that their duty leaves will soon be reinstated following assurances from the college administration. The decision to reverse an earlier notification denying these leaves is seen as a positive step for academic and professional growth, as faculty rely on these leaves to participate in essential academic activities.
Concerns arose earlier in October when an order restricted faculty members from taking duty leaves, which are crucial for attending conferences, workshops, and courses that help meet the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2018 requirements. According to these regulations, faculty members are entitled to 30 days of duty leave per year to engage in such activities, which are vital for updating knowledge, contributing to academic discourse, and fulfilling promotion eligibility criteria.
The initial decision sparked significant opposition from faculty members and academic groups. Pankaj Garg, chairman of the Indian National Teachers Congress (INTEC), criticized the order, pointing out that restricting duty leave not only affects individual career progression but also diminishes the institution’s academic standing. “Attending conferences and orientation programs is essential for promotions, and denying these opportunities violates UGC regulations,” Garg emphasized.
The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) also rallied behind the faculty, urging the administration to reverse the order. After discussions with Anju Vali Tikoo, dean of Law Centre-I, DUTA received assurances that the policy would be reconsidered. While an official communication is yet to be issued, faculty members are optimistic about the upcoming resolution, which will allow them to continue contributing to research and maintaining the institution’s academic reputation.
