At a press conference held on October 9, 2024, at the Consulate General of India, Neeta Bhasin, founder of the Diwali at Times Square festival, announced the details of this year’s three-day celebration. This annual event, recognized as the largest South Asian gathering in North America and possibly the biggest Diwali festival outside of India, will take place in the heart of Times Square.

Bhasin highlighted the festival’s role in bringing together diverse ethnic communities to experience and share Indian culture and arts. She expressed her appreciation for the tremendous media support that has helped elevate the festival’s profile internationally. This year, CBS National and CBS NYC will provide extensive coverage of the event.

A key focus of the festival is to connect younger generations with their cultural roots, especially with the upcoming Diwali holiday in NYC public schools. Bhasin emphasized the importance of leaving a lasting impression on children, ensuring they feel pride in their heritage. She also thanked Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar for her efforts in making Diwali a public school holiday.

This year’s event is co-sponsored by New York City, Kia, the Consulate General of India, Proctor & Gamble, Northwell Health, State Bank of India, and others. New York City Mayor’s Office Deputy Commissioner Dilip Chauhan noted Diwali’s symbolism of light over darkness and celebrated the holiday’s inclusion in schools, allowing children to learn about its significance.

The Diwali celebrations will kick off with a gala dinner, honor awards ceremony, and silent auction on October 18, 2024, at Tribeca 360, a prime NYC venue. Notable honorees include Chandrika Tandon, recipient of the Woman of the Year award, and Raja Rajamannar, CMO of MasterCard, who will be named Man of the Year. Other awardees include Grammy-winning artist Falu Shah, chef Vikas Khanna, and fashion designer Prabal Gurung.

The main event on October 19, 2024, will feature a full day of festivities at Times Square, including a Diwali Bazaar, cultural performances, and the Light up Times Square ceremony. Performers include Chandrika Tandon, Priya and Pinky from India, Indo-Caribbean artist Terry Gajraj, and chef Kunal Lamba.

This year’s Diwali at Times Square promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and shared heritage.
