DU Introduces New Policy Allowing Dual Degree Programs

The University of Delhi (DU) has announced a new policy allowing students to pursue dual degree programs simultaneously, offering greater academic flexibility. Students can now enroll in one degree through the regular mode at DU colleges or departments and pursue another via Open and Distance Learning (ODL) at the School of Open Learning (SOL). However, the policy restricts students from pursuing two similar degrees, such as BCom (Hons) and BCom (Pass), even if one is through ODL.

To meet academic requirements, students must attend classes, complete assignments, and meet promotion criteria for both degrees. While DU has structured its schedule to prevent conflicts between regular and ODL programs, students will need to carefully manage their time to avoid burnout.

The dual degree policy aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, encouraging multidisciplinary education. It is expected to broaden academic and career opportunities for students, particularly for those who may face limitations in regular mode courses due to seat availability. The policy allows students to explore various subjects and tailor their academic journey to their interests and career goals.

To prevent overlapping or redundancy, students will need to complete distinct coursework and credits for each degree. DU requires 132 credits per degree, and students must accumulate these credits separately for both programs.

The initiative aims to enhance employability by allowing students to combine degrees in fields like Information Technology (IT) and law, opening pathways to diverse career opportunities. While this policy expands options for students, it also requires them to sign an undertaking ensuring that they will not enroll in the same course in both regular and ODL modes.
