The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase in the number of MBBS seats at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to 200 for the academic year 2024-25, as announced by state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane.
Previously, GMCH had been approved for 150 MBBS seats. This expansion to 200 seats is seen as a major milestone in enhancing the institution’s ability to deliver quality medical education and healthcare services.
Minister Rane highlighted that this approval is a significant step towards increasing the capacity of the state-run medical college, thereby allowing more students to achieve their goal of becoming skilled medical professionals.
In addition to the increase in MBBS seats, the NMC has also approved expansions in several postgraduate MD/MS courses at GMCH. The seat increases are as follows:
- MD (Radiodiagnosis): From 6 to 7 seats
- MS (General Surgery): From 6 to 15 seats
- MS (Obstetrics and Gynaecology): From 6 to 8 seats
- MD (Pharmacology): From 4 to 6 seats
- MD (Paediatrics): From 7 to 10 seats
Rane emphasized that these expansions reflect the government’s commitment to advancing medical excellence and meeting the growing healthcare needs of the region. He reiterated GMCH’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of medical professionals through cutting-edge medical education.
