Karwar, July 5: Due to heavy rains over the past two days, several areas in Uttara Kannada district have been flooded, causing disruption to daily life. In light of these conditions and to ensure student safety, the Deputy Commissioner, Gangubai Manakar, has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in four taluks on July 6.
Taluks with Declared Holidays:
- Karwar
- Kumta
- Bhatkal
- Honnavar
Schools and colleges in these taluks will remain closed, while in Shirsi, Siddapur, and Mundgod taluks, institutions will remain open.
Rain Impact in Uttara Kannada: The district has been experiencing heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in roads and low-lying areas. Control centers have been opened across the district as a precaution, and two NDRF teams consisting of 35 members each have arrived from Bengaluru to assist.
Helpline for Rain-related Issues: Citizens facing rain-related issues can contact the control room at 1950 for assistance. Additionally, 439 areas have been identified as potential landslide zones, and revenue department teams are prepared to handle any flood situations.
Rain in Udupi District: Similar heavy rainfall has prompted the declaration of holidays in two taluks in Udupi district:
- Kundapur
- Brahmavar
Holidays have been announced for schools and pre-university colleges, but degree, postgraduate, ITI, and engineering students will not have holidays, as stated by Assistant Commissioner Rashmi of Kundapur Subdivision.
Landslide Threat near Shirur: There is an increased threat of landslides near Shirur on National Highway 66. The IRB company’s non-scientific excavation activities have exacerbated this risk, causing annual concerns during the monsoon season.
