Hyderabad has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Tuesday, leading to significant disruptions across the city. The District Education Officer (DEO) has announced a holiday for schools on August 20 and 21 due to the adverse weather conditions. This decision comes following orders from the higher authorities of the school education department, which have instructed DEOs and Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) to declare holidays based on the prevailing situation.
Weather and School Closures
- Affected Areas: Major localities in Hyderabad, including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Khairatabad, Panjagutta, Ameerpet, and many others, have been receiving heavy rainfall.
- Holiday Declaration: The DEOs in Ranga Reddy district declared a holiday for schools on Tuesday, and the School Education Department has extended this to August 21. Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy has directed that if the heavy rainfall persists, a holiday should be declared for Wednesday as well.
Current Conditions
- Power and Traffic Issues: Power supply has been interrupted in several areas, and streams and bends are overflowing. Water stagnation on roads has caused severe traffic congestion, affecting morning commuters who have faced extended delays.
- Emergency Measures: The Collector has instructed schools to close if necessary, based on the ongoing weather conditions.
Bharat Bandh on August 21
In addition to the weather-related disruptions, the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh on Wednesday to protest the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on SC and ST reservations. The court has permitted states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST communities to prioritize those in urgent need of reservation quotas. The SC and ST communities in Rajasthan have also expressed their support for the bandh.
- Impact: The Bharat Bandh is expected to lead to widespread demonstrations and disruptions. It is advisable for residents to plan their travel accordingly and stay updated on the developments related to both the bandh and weather conditions.
For further updates, residents should monitor local news sources and official announcements from the Hyderabad District Education Office and other relevant authorities.
