On August 11, 2024, the Bihar government transferred four Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, including Kumar Ravi from the 2005 batch. Before his transfer, Ravi accompanied Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on a tour to assess flood conditions and water logging in Patna. Ravi, formerly the Commissioner of Patna, has been reassigned to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Mayank Warwade will now take over as the new Commissioner of Patna. Here’s a look at Kumar Ravi’s educational background and career achievements:
1. Early Life and Education
Kumar Ravi was born in Nalanda, Bihar, where he completed his early education. He achieved an All India Rank of 142 in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance exam and enrolled at IIT Kanpur. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious institute.
2. Early Career
Following his BTech, Ravi worked as an engineer for a Delhi-based multinational company from 2001 to January 2002. Unfulfilled by his private sector role, he began preparing for the Civil Services Examination and was selected in 2003. He joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax.
3. IAS Career
In 2005, Ravi entered the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). His initial posting was as Assistant Collector in the Bihar cadre. During the 2008 floods in Supaul district, he played a crucial role in relief and rehabilitation efforts. Ravi also managed several significant elections, including the 2009 Assembly by-elections, 2010 Assembly elections, 2011 Panchayat elections, and 2012 Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Societies (PACS) elections.
4. Notable Contributions
Ravi’s career includes serving as District Magistrate in Supaul, Darbhanga, and other districts. He was instrumental in restoring peace in violence-affected areas of Gaya district. As Patna’s District Magistrate in January 2018, he led encroachment-free drives and made improvements to the traffic system.
Kumar Ravi’s work has had a significant impact on Bihar’s administrative efficiency and disaster management. His new role at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat will likely see him continue to contribute to the state’s governance.
