Sanjeev Hans, an IAS officer from the 1997 batch of the Bihar cadre, is facing serious scrutiny due to allegations of corruption and bribery. Originally hailing from Punjab, Hans earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering before succeeding in the UPSC exams, which paved his way into the IAS. His administrative career began as the SDM of Banka district in Bihar, and he later held several significant roles, including Collector in various districts and Secretary of the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL).
Recent investigations have revealed that Hans possesses assets that are disproportionate to his known income. Reports suggest that during his tenure in key administrative positions, he engaged in unethical practices, allegedly demanding luxury vehicles as bribes and embezzling significant amounts of money from a woman. These allegations have raised alarms about corruption within the IAS.
Hans’s background includes being inspired by his father, who served in the State Administrative Service (PCS). This familial influence motivated him to pursue a career in public service, leading to his successful IAS candidacy. However, the ambition that once drove him took a troubling turn as he reportedly became entangled in corrupt practices.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently conducted raids on Hans’s properties and those of his associates as part of the disproportionate assets investigation. During these raids, authorities recovered gold valued at ₹1.5 crore, cash amounting to ₹87 lakh, and silver worth ₹11 lakh. In light of these findings, the Bihar Special Surveillance Unit (SVU) has filed an FIR against Hans and former Jhanjharpur MLA Gulab Yadav.
In addition to the financial misconduct allegations, Hans and Yadav are also facing grave accusations of gang rape from a woman. While her petition was initially rejected by the High Court, she has since escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking further legal recourse.
As investigations continue, the implications of this scandal raise pressing concerns about integrity within the administrative services and the ongoing challenges of corruption in public offices.
