The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Kanpur has reported a significant 12% decline in overall student placements for the 2023-24 academic session. This downturn is marked by a notable reduction in international job offers compared to the previous year, according to the institute’s latest report.
Key Statistics:
- Overall Placement Rate: 76% for 2023-24, down from 87.9% in 2022-23.
- Total Registered Students: 1,448
- Placed Students: 1,096
- Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs): 220 from 66 companies, a 6% increase from last year.
- International Offers: 22, a significant drop from 81 offers received last year.
Placement Details:
- Undergraduate Programs: 687 out of 849 students (approximately 81%) secured placements.
- Postgraduate Programs: 409 out of 599 students (around 68%) were placed.
Department-wise Highlights:
- Computer Science Engineering (CSE): 87% placement rate, down from 95% last year.
- Aerospace Engineering (AE): 61% placement rate, compared to 85% in 2022-23.
- Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering (BSBE): 54% placement rate, down from 74% last year.
MTech Programs:
- Materials Science Programme (MSP): 20% placement rate, significantly down from 100% last year.
- Cognitive Science (CGS): 50% placement rate, compared to 100% in 2022-23.
- Photonics Science and Engineering (PSE): 33% placement rate, down from 67% last year.
Recruiters: Prominent companies involved in the placement process included Google, Microsoft India, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche India, Oracle India, Tata Projects, BPCL, Qualcomm, Jaguar Land Rover India, Reliance Industries, and Texas Instruments.
Placement Process: The placement drive for 2023-24 was conducted in hybrid mode, spanning two phases:
- Phase-1: December 1, 2023, to December 15, 2023
- Phase-2: Mid-January 2024
The report also highlights a shift in student preferences, with many opting for higher studies or entrepreneurship over immediate job placements. The final placement report for IIT-Kanpur is expected to be released soon. The new academic session is set to begin in August.
