To address the pressing need for aviation safety expertise in India, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation is collaborating with L’Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), a renowned French institution, to offer an innovative ‘Aviation Safety Management’ course. Supported by Airbus, this course aims to enhance the safety skills of professionals in the Indian aviation sector, with the first batch of 30 students set to begin in January 2025. This marks the first initiative of its kind within India’s civil aviation industry.

Course Details and Structure

The programme, designed to equip participants with essential safety management skills, spans two years. The structure includes both in-person and virtual elements to accommodate professionals actively working in the air transport industry. For the first year, students will attend in-person sessions one week every two months. This frequency increases in the second year to one week every month. French faculty from ENAC will conduct these sessions, providing specialized, international insights into aviation safety.

In addition to theoretical learning, the course integrates practical projects and a six-month dissertation. This hands-on approach is intended to foster practical problem-solving skills and develop soft skills crucial for safety management, such as leadership, communication, and assertiveness.

Target Audience and Enrollment

This course is tailored for professionals and managers currently working in the aviation sector, including those in government and private airline operations. With a maximum of 30 seats in its first batch, the course aims to maintain an intimate setting for focused learning. The deadline to register is December 15, 2024. Interested individuals can apply through IIT Madras Pravartak’s digital skills platform or contact dsa@iitmpravartak.net for further information.

Addressing Growing Industry Challenges

According to MJ Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak, “Civil aviation has seen rapid growth over the last two decades, driven by globalization and digitization. However, this growth also presents unique challenges, particularly in safety standards.” He emphasized that while regulatory frameworks are essential, comprehensive safety management requires skilled professionals who can navigate the complex and evolving needs of the aviation industry.

Enhancing India’s Aviation Safety Standards

Air travel is highly regulated, requiring stringent safety protocols to protect millions of passengers worldwide. As India’s aviation industry expands, the need for adept safety managers becomes even more critical. This new course aims to fill that gap, preparing safety managers capable of adapting to the ever-evolving safety standards and ensuring the continued growth of safe air travel.

By developing skilled safety professionals, IIT Madras and ENAC are laying the groundwork for an advanced safety culture in India’s civil aviation, helping to make Indian skies safer for everyone.
