Following the surprise retirement announcement of Schools Chancellor David Banks, Mayor Eric Adams introduced Melissa Aviles-Ramos as the next leader of New York City’s public school system. Aviles-Ramos, the highest-ranking Latina in the department, will take over after Banks steps down on December 31, 2024.

Aviles-Ramos, a Bronx native and experienced educator, has been praised for her work, particularly with migrant students. Adams highlighted her leadership in the city’s efforts to support the thousands of migrant students entering the system. She began her career as a high school English teacher in 2007 and later served as a principal, superintendent, and Banks’ chief of staff. Her return to the department this summer as deputy chancellor for family and community engagement set the stage for the leadership transition.

Banks, who had a nearly 40-year career in the city’s schools, emphasized that his decision to retire and the appointment of Aviles-Ramos were unrelated to ongoing federal investigations into Adams’ administration. Both Banks and Aviles-Ramos reassured the public of their commitment to stability and continuity in the school system.

Observers acknowledge the challenges Aviles-Ramos faces in leading the nation’s largest school system, particularly amid uncertainties surrounding Adams’ administration. However, Aviles-Ramos’ experience and relationships with the city’s educational community have garnered support from educators, principals, and parents alike.

“She’s the real deal,” said John Powers, a retired Bronx high school principal who worked closely with Aviles-Ramos. He lauded her for her ability to improve graduation rates and her hands-on approach to instructional leadership.

Despite the political and operational hurdles, Aviles-Ramos pledged to continue the work of her predecessor while supporting teachers and engaging with families to drive the system forward. “We are going to get stuff done,” she assured the mayor and the public.
