The Ministry of Education has launched a comprehensive initiative to establish Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) across the country. Aimed at safeguarding school students from the detrimental effects of tobacco, which annually causes approximately 1.35 million deaths in India, the campaign aligns closely with the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP).

Key components of the initiative include the implementation of Tobacco Free Educational Institution Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The Department of School Education & Literacy has developed a detailed “ToFEI Implementation Manual,” launched on World No Tobacco Day, observed on May 31, 2024.

The Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy has issued a directive to all States and Union Territories to adhere strictly to the ToFEI guidelines. This directive encompasses actions such as prominently displaying ‘Tobacco Free Area’ signage, conducting awareness programs, appointing ‘Tobacco Monitors,’ and ensuring no tobacco presence within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions.

Furthermore, the campaign underscores the pivotal role of civil society in advancing awareness about tobacco de-addiction through mediums such as street plays, video presentations, and talks organized by NGOs. Schools are encouraged to collaborate with the School Management Committee, National Social Service, and Vidyanjali-School Volunteer Initiative to actively promote tobacco prevention measures.

This nationwide effort seeks to create a healthier environment within educational institutions, safeguarding the well-being of students and fostering a culture of tobacco-free living from a young age.
