The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)’s PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) has proposed a new evaluation system for calculating the final marks in class 12, according to a report submitted to the Education Ministry. This proposal includes performance metrics from classes 9, 10, and 11 as part of the final marks calculation for class 12.
Proposed Weightage Distribution:
- Class 9 Performance: 15%
- Class 10 Performance: 20%
- Class 11 Performance: 25%
- Class 12 Performance: 40%
This new system aims to create a holistic assessment method by incorporating a student’s consistent performance across the four years.
Assessment Types and Weightage:
The report recommends combining both formative and summative assessments for a more comprehensive evaluation:
- Class 9:
- Formative Assessments: 70%
- Summative Assessments: 30%
- Class 10:
- Formative Assessments: 50%
- Summative Assessments: 50%
- Class 11:
- Formative Assessments: 40%
- Summative Assessments: 60%
- Class 12:
- Formative Assessments: 30%
- Summative Assessments: 70%
State Suggestions:
In meetings with various state school boards, different weightage distributions were proposed for classes 10 and 12:
- Class 10:
- 40% from Class 9 marks
- 60% from Class 10 marks
- Class 12:
- 40% from Class 11 marks
- 60% from Class 12 marks
Credit System Proposal:
The PARAKH report also recommends the introduction of a credit system:
- Class 9 and 10: 40 credits each
- Class 11 and 12: 44 credits each
This system would help standardize the assessment across different boards and create a more uniform evaluation process.
The final decision on these recommendations is expected to be made following a meeting with the remaining school boards in August. If implemented, these changes could significantly impact the way student performance is evaluated in the Indian education system, promoting a more balanced and comprehensive approach to student assessment.
