The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially announced the discontinuation of all courses offered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) in Mumbai. This decision follows a show-cause notice issued by the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) to CPS for not adhering to the regulatory provisions set by the NMC.
Key Points from the NMC Notice:
- CPS Qualifications Not Recognised: The NMC stated that any CPS qualifications obtained after the issuance of the public notice would not be recognized for registration.
- Misleading Statement: The CPS had claimed in its response to the show-cause notice that it considered itself an examination body akin to the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which the NMC deemed misleading. Unlike the CPS, the NBEMS is a government organization with authority under the NMC Act of 2019.
- Lack of Authority: The NMC clarified that CPS, being a non-government organization, lacks the authority to permit or recognize any course, conduct examinations, or award degrees. Such powers are reserved for universities established or recognized under central, provincial, or state acts, or institutions empowered by an act of Parliament.
Conclusion:
As a result of these findings, the NMC has decided to discontinue all courses offered by CPS with immediate effect. The public notice also serves as a warning to medical institutions, hospitals running CPS courses, and prospective students considering admission to these programs.
