Chandigarh: The Centre for Human Rights and Duties at Panjab University organized an exposure visit for its master’s degree students to the Society for Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged (SOREM) in Sector 36-C. This initiative aimed to enhance students’ understanding of special education and the challenges faced by individuals with developmental and intellectual disorders.
Insights from Experts
During the visit, Prof. Namita Gupta, Chairperson of the Centre for Human Rights and Duties, highlighted the importance of practical exposure in understanding human rights and duties related to special education. Sangeeta Jain, the Principal and Executive Director of SOREM, emphasized the need for academic exchanges and awareness projects. She encouraged the students to advocate for individuals with conditions such as autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Down’s Syndrome, which often go unnoticed in society.
Special Education Initiatives
SOREM specializes in early intervention programs that prepare children with special needs for inclusive education. The students learned about various educational and vocational modules offered by the NGO. Additionally, they were introduced to SOREM’s on-site initiatives, which include the manufacturing and marketing of Diwali hampers and products made by children with special needs. Items such as handmade chocolates, candles, organic masala powders, and decorative bags will be showcased at various Diwali exhibitions, including the Chandigarh Carnival at Leisure Valley on October 25.
