IPS officer Rashmi Shukla has made history as Maharashtra’s first female Director General of Police (DGP), assuming the role on January 4, 2024. Recently highlighted in a speech by the Prime Minister, Shukla’s appointment marks a significant milestone in breaking gender barriers within the traditionally male-dominated realm of high-ranking police positions. The Prime Minister commended her dedication and impactful service, recognizing her achievement as a step forward in advancing gender equality in law enforcement.
Born in August 1965 in Mumbai, Shukla graduated from Elphinstone College and completed her master’s degree at Mumbai University. A 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer, she succeeded Rajneesh Seth, who retired on December 31, 2023. Prior to her appointment as DGP, Shukla served as the Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on deputation.
Shukla’s career has been marked by a series of significant roles, including Superintendent of Police for Nashik Rural, Aurangabad Rural, Satara, and Pune Rural districts. She has also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zones 1 and 5 in Mumbai, Additional Commissioner of Police in Mumbai, Joint Commissioner of the Crime Branch in Mumbai, Commissioner of Pune Police, and Additional Director General, among other positions.
Her appointment as DGP highlights her extensive experience and leadership skills, bringing a fresh perspective to the Maharashtra Police. Shukla’s career exemplifies the growing presence and impact of women in high-ranking law enforcement roles.
