Schools in Chennai will be closed today, November 12, following a forecast of heavy rain in the region. The district collector declared the holiday for city schools as a precautionary measure.
Weather Alert Issued by IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms for Chennai and nearby districts, including Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. Reports indicate that several areas, particularly Thiruvallur, have already experienced significant downpours.
Cause of the Rainfall
The ongoing spell of rainfall across northern coastal Tamil Nadu is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. This, coupled with the strengthening of easterly winds over the past week, has resulted in isolated heavy rain affecting the coastal region. Since last Thursday, Chennai and surrounding areas have experienced bouts of intense rainfall due to these weather patterns.
Residents and authorities are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of expected heavy rain.
