The Tripura state government has announced the closure of all educational institutions on August 22 due to severe weather conditions affecting the region. This decision includes government schools, government-aided schools, privately managed schools, schools under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and madrasas across the state.

Details of the Closure:

  • Affected Institutions: All schools and madrasas across Tripura, including government, government-aided, private institutions, and those under TTAADC.
  • Dates: Schools will be closed on August 22. Additionally, all colleges will remain closed on August 21.
  • Reason for Closure: The closure is in response to heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides across the state, aimed at ensuring the safety of students amidst worsening weather conditions.

Chief Minister’s Announcement:

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha communicated the closure through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “Due to the current situation and heavy rainfall, the government has declared a two-day closure for all schools on August 21st and 22nd. Additionally, all colleges will remain closed on August 21st. All students, teachers, and staff are requested to stay safe and follow the instructions.”

Current Situation:

  • Flood Impact: The state is experiencing severe flash floods caused by continuous heavy rainfall, which has led to the death of at least seven people and left two others missing. Flood levels in four rivers have reached unsafe levels, prompting nearly 5,600 households to seek refuge in rescue shelters.
  • Weather Forecast: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days. The persistent rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure area over central Bangladesh and surrounding regions, potentially causing further disruptions including low visibility and traffic snarls.

Safety Measures:

The state government urges all students, teachers, and staff to stay safe, adhere to local advisories, and avoid travel unless necessary during this period of adverse weather. The closure of schools and colleges is part of the government’s efforts to protect individuals and manage the impact of the severe weather conditions effectively.
