Two women primary school teachers were arrested on Thursday in North Goa for allegedly assaulting a nine-year-old student after he tore a page from his textbook, according to a police official. The incident, which took place earlier this week at Shree Saraswati Vidya Mandir Primary School in Vagali-Camurlim, prompted swift action after the child’s parents filed a complaint.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sandesh Chodankar, informed PTI that the two teachers, identified as Sujal Gawade and Kanishka Gadekar, were taken into custody following the complaint at Colvale police station. According to the complaint, the teachers physically assaulted the Class 4 student for damaging his textbook, causing injuries that required medical attention. The child was admitted to a hospital with injuries to his thighs, legs, and back.

The teachers have been charged under Section 82 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) of the Juvenile Justice Act, which addresses cruelty against children, and Section 8 (1) of the Goa Children’s Act, a law focused on the protection and welfare of children in the state.

Authorities are investigating the case further to determine the full extent of the incident, while the teachers remain in custody pending legal proceedings. The case has sparked concern among parents and educators, raising questions about student safety and the handling of disciplinary actions in schools.
