The Union health ministry has granted approval for the commencement of MBBS programmes at five new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, the number of seats at medical colleges in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has been increased from 50 to 100 each. This expansion has resulted in the creation of 600 new MBBS seats, bringing the total number of new seats for the 2024-25 academic session in Uttar Pradesh to 1,200.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s engagement with Union Health Minister JP Nadda led to the submission of an appeal by the principals of the medical colleges to the National Medical Commission (NMC). This successful appeal resulted in the recognition of the seven medical colleges.
Out of the total 11,200 MBBS seats available in the state, 5,150 are in government medical colleges, while 6,050 are in private medical institutions.
DG Medical Education Kinjal Singh highlighted that the department had recently appealed to the Union Health Ministry to approve 100 MBBS seats at five autonomous state medical colleges located in Auraiya, Chandauli, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Kaushambi. The ministry has approved the increase in seats to 100 at each of these institutions, thereby adding 600 MBBS seats to the state’s capacity.
