In a move to shed colonial legacies, the Union Health Ministry has instructed all its institutes to replace the traditional black robe and cap used during convocation ceremonies with attire reflecting local Indian traditions. This change aims to move away from the European-style dress introduced by the British during their colonial rule.

The directive emphasizes that each institute, including AIIMS and other medical education centers, should design a dress code that aligns with the cultural heritage of the state in which they are located. Institutes are required to submit their proposals for the new dress code, which will be reviewed and approved by the Union Health Secretary.

This initiative echoes the sentiments of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who advocated for the adoption of indigenous attire over foreign-inspired gowns.

For more details and updates, institutions should refer to the official communication from the Union Health Ministry.
